Abstract

After highlighting the importance of Construction and Public Works and the important role the chemical industry plays in improving the characteristics of traditional products, this article analyzes the qualities of new insulation and safety materials. Amongst these materials, the following deserve special mention: — Polyvinyl chloride, used in carpentry, water pipes, etc., because of its water-proof properties, good heat and acoustic insulation and practically non-existent maintenance expenses; — Polyethylene, used for water by-passes and sewers, because of tis lightness and non-inflammability; — Polyamides, used in locksmithing, because of its considerable mechanical properties and high rust resistance, etc.; — Polystyrene foam, used in different types of linings; — Polyester foam, used for sound-proofing and combined with lead it is used against vibrations; — Cellular glass pellets, with many properties; — Layered glass, with polyvinyl butyral layers: good shock resistance properties and also used for reducing solar energy transmission; — Polycarbonate, used in airspace investigations and as a safety material.
