The Chivor hydroelectric power plant is the largest ever built in Colombia. This plant, which is located 160 km to the northwest of Bogotá, on the Bata River, in the Bocaya Province near Santa María, will have a capacity of 1.000.000 kW and its development will take place in two stages of 500.000 kW capacity each. The first 125.000 kW unit was commissioned in the middle of 1976 and the fourth unit to complete the first 500.000 kW stage was ready in December 1976. Construction of the units 5 through 8 are programmed for commissioning in 1978. This article describes the Esmeralda dam, rock, with an impermeable clay core, 237 m high, considered as the third tallest in the world, of this type; the reservoir, the overflow; the loading tunnel; the loading pipe network; and the machinery building.
