Light is one of the elements of architecture. Hence, night illumination of external walls and monuments is a means of enhancing plastic beauty, as well as the historical, artistic and other merits of the building. Consequently, floodlighting should be designed to emphasize the above mentioned features of architectural works and planned with special reference to specific requirements. The author takes advantage of his experience in this type of work, and indicates the criterion that should be adopted to design and carry out floodlighting projects. There are basic principles to be observed, such as balance of luminosity, light and shade contrasts, etc. Finally, floodlighting of buildings ought be understood as an investment, and not as an expense.
