The reason is given why compound structures are not more widely used in Spanish constructional work at present. The possibility is discussed that this technique shall be used without inhibition in the near future, in all those cases where it is the best constructional solution. A succinct account is given of a simple, approximate method, and also a more accurate one, due to Sattler, to calculate compound steel and concrete sections. By means of an example, it is shown how to make use of tables, and of an electronic program, which are to be included in a book shortly to be published, written by the author of this article. These tables and electronic program tend to avoid the laboriousness of calculations and are an aid in designing this type of structures.
