Sobre las dos laderas del cauce cerrado del tramo superior del río Ródano, ya en Suiza, donde separa los dos Cantones de Vaud y Valais, se apoyan los trazados de dos carreteras, cuya intercomunicación se hacía por un puente antiguo de mampostería, el cual, por su disposición y estrecha calzada, era causa de embotellamientos en la circulación.
