Conventional research facilities for small animals are complex for planning and designing. That is why when designing a new unit, it is valuable to collect the information that is available on similar units already built, in order to be able to analyze the different conceptual models and workflows that could serve as a reference for the design. In this work, through standardized architectural plans, we study the organizational model and the conceptual design of three different conventional research facilities for small animals belonging to Health Research Institutes accredited by the Carlos III Health Institute. The conclusions drawn from the analysis of several cases may be useful in the design of future facilities, both for researchers and professionals responsible for the functional program, design, construction and start-up of new conventional research units for small animals.
