The beautiful needle which emerges from the roof of the PaIau Güell can be defined, according to the author of this article, as a cupola of classic conception with all its elements. It is composed of three essential parts: the cupola -of a single structure (and not double as had been said previously), made of four superimposed rings of small parabolic vaults, the lantern -with windows of a parabolic profile and other rhomboid apertures-, and the weathercock and lightening rod, a decorative and functional sculptural group made of iron, brass and copper. In this article, the constructive, static and formal aspects of the group and each one of the parts are analyzed in detail. An especially interesting aspect refers to the exterior facing of the needle, made of small pieces of glazed sandstone from the inside walls of the wood-burning time ovens, now abandoned. The nature of this facing, unstudied until now, is published for the first time in these pages.
