Abstract

The appearance of prestressed concrete in the forties and of the span bridge (puente atirantado) in the nineteen sixties have displaced the arch bridge. There has recently been renewed interest in this type of bridge, for various reasons: construction in advance of the arch as a projection, with the thrust of the deck on the already constructed arch, broader possibilities for location as the result of the adoption of certain special arrangements; an increase in the number of arches with lower deck due to the attractivesness for the user.
