Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics can be applied to plain concrete provided the fracture process zone be small compared with the size of the structural element. In this situation the stress State at the tip of the crack can be characterized by means of the stress intensity factor. The first part of the paper considers modeling crack extension in concrete by the finite element method. The second part deals with an example problem, the cracked Fontana Dam.
