The Pio XI clinic—featuring contrasting volumes and fine light-and-shadow effects — contains in five stories radiology, surgery and maternity facilities, as well as nurses' living quarters and other services required for its 150 patient bed capacity. The unique architectural layout of the building is a direct result of both a spatial solution aiming at minimising walking distances from the various services to the patient rooms, and of an attempt to provide the different hospital facilities with the best possible insulation from external noise, as well as with natural lighting.
