Abstract

From the surveys carried out on traffic over the bridge which communicates Zwijndrecht and Dordrecht, it can be deduced that a large number of vehicles would be obliged to wait in interminable queues and to with stand dangerous situations such that, with the increases foreseen for the next 10 years, would make necessary the construction of a tunnel under the Oude Maas, the widest submerged tunnel in the world, apart from the extension of the Moerdijk bridge. This article describes the problems which arose and the successful construction solutions adopted to solve them, avoiding blocking normal Canal traffic.
