Sports Palace in Oviedo - Spain

The Oviedo Sports Palace is covered by a great hay formed by three biarticulated parabolic domes; of them, one large middle one and two side ones with less span. The construction method used in these ondulated-cylindrical domes is that of «wave-arches » made up of «wave-wedge pieces», which consist of coupling special large ceramic parts in a previously studied way. The main part is made up of eight wave-arches, 7 m in height, with a 100 m span, and covers the sports hall with its tribunes, the 180 m long track and the 30 x 60 m rectangle for sports games. The side domes which cover the two main tribunes are made up of two wave-arches, with a 90 m spen, hinged at the bases and continuous in the key. Due to its great span, 100 m, which makes it one of the biggest cylindrical roofs of this type built until now, its great indoor luminosity, its impressive slenderness, and its original construction methods are an important basis for being able to make domes with larger spans.
