Use of carboniferous shale in the construction industry

The quarry waste resulting from mining is shale that piles up in such quantities that they get to change the landscape of the region. There is no logic in wasting such great amounts of material and this is the reason why studies have been carried out to get to know to what extent this material could be used in the construction industry. Thus, the experiments and works carried out in the coal mines in northern France have demonstrated that under certain conditions it was possible to take advantage of the shale, taken as raw material with granulated aggregates as end result, which can be used in concrete and brick manufacturing and in road works. The present article studies the procedures and systems for obtaining these granulated aggregates, as well as their field of use.
