The building is situated in the bay of Porto-Pi, serving as a lock for which reason special attention was paid to its exterior. It consist of two floors and a basement, where the activities of the Centre are carried out: a) Research with: laboratories, workshops, office-rooms, etc. b) Public sections, with: exhibitions, objects from scientific expeditions, lecture halls, etc. It has been attempted to give both sections their due independence and yet the appropriate connection between them. The dominating aesthetic criteria are: the BUCKET, the traditional recipient of the island; the PATIO, the characteristic element of the Mallorcan architecture, and the WATER, being the basic reason for the activities of the Centre. Construction of reinforced concrete, unfaced concrete, exterior carpentry of wood, aluminum blinds and double glass panes with venetian blinds in between.
