It is 6,398 m, long, sloping from north to south, with a level difference of 96 m, and an excavation section of 92 m2. This system of perforation of tunnels in rocks of little cohesion has successfully been used in Austria, the United States and in Germany (the underground in Frankfurt) through excavations in stages with radial anchorages on the basis of quick hardening mortar which gives them an aspect of hedgehog in its first phase; later the metal cover sheets are screwed on. Innumerable difficulties had to be overcome due to the slaty configuration of the mountain, when water dangerous to concrete appeared and when imperative needs for quick timbering emerged so that one third of the time corresponded to the progress and two thirds to security measures, working three shifts for an average daily progress of 4 m.
