The Swedish city of Gothenburg is situated on both sides of the river Gota, which causes an intensive traffic across the Gota bridge as well as across the recently constructed Alvsborg suspension bridge. For this reason and in order to make the traffic run smoothly and to canalize it the above mentioned tunnel has been constructed which consists of a covered part of 454 m and uncovered parts at the ends, each of them being 60 m. It comprises two independent branch tubes with three lanes in each direction, separated by a space in the centre for service and maintenance access, as well as the ventilation ducts. The work has been ordered by the port authorities of the city, according to the project of the Christiani & Nielsen, and carried out by the firm Skanska Gementgjuteriet, under the supervision of the engineer Nils Engström, the director of the Head Office in Stockholm.
