This article describes specifically the development of the navigation locks and the prerequisites for their construction since it would lead us into too vast a field to discuss also locks of irrigation, ordinary ones and weirs. It is well known that the river navigation develops at an accelerated speed and that the project requirements for river locks are entirely different from those for sea locks. Therefore the following is insisted upon: their capacity, dimension, construction, materials used, minimum waiting time for the boats which have to pass through the locks, possibilities of rapid exit, opening and closing of the gates with modern mechanisms, economy and perfection of the finish.
