The two section, Wakefield-Darton and Darton-Tankersley, of 10.5 and 11.5 km respectively, complete the work on the important M-1 British motor road, which was begun twelve years ago. Apart from the road itself, these two sections include 19 bridging works: bridges, footbridges, and interchanges. Most of them are of prestressed concrete, and in some cases precast units have been extensively utilized. The first section was made by Richard Costain Ltd., and the second by Dowsett Engineering Construction Ltd. The Calder River Bridge was the object of a design competition. The others were done under the direction of Col. S. Maynard Lovell, County Inspector of West Riding for the Transport Ministry.
