New Swiss system of lining tunnels

This article describes a new construction procedure for the provisional and permanent lining of tunnels in loose rocks. Its originality is due to specially shaped metal sheets which act firstly as moulding, and afterwards as concrete reinforcement. The technical and economic advantages of this system are shown, and it is compared with other methods which have been used until now. As a practical example of the use of this method the construction of the Fronzaley tunnels on the Swiss motorway N. 9 is described.
