The North West Centre constitutes an ambitious scheme which is stimulating change in ail the most important activities of a large sector of the city of Frankfurt. It has been designed on four superimposed levels. To obtain a free flow of traffic, there has been created a series of internal thoroughfares without vehicular traffic, where commercial activity can be carried on along with a full use of space. Because of the great number of interests both public and private to be considered, and after much study and discussion, utilization formulas were reached which would please everyone as far as possible: the Leasing System for public buildings, contracts between municipality and tenants, flexible rents for official buildings, etc. In this scheme several interesting features stand out: the underground station equipped with a special anti-acoustic lining; the carpark with a capacity for over 2,000 vehicles, with entrances and exits specially designed to avoid hold-ups; the system of pedestrian levels, and supply levels with internal streets for the delivery of merchandise, special ramps, passing zones, etc.
