Abstract

This paper discusses the evolution of thin shell structures towards a «free form». A study is made of the philosophy underlying this movement, its contents and the factors favouring its development. The need to develop new design techniques is brought up. The proposal is made to include the principles of structural mechanics as one of the factors to systematise free form design, with priority over geometry. A brief comment is made on elastic reticules.
