Abstract

The author seeks to provide a clear understanding of the most important and frequent chemical additives, as they affect the construction specialist, without pretending however to encompass the vast field of concrete and mortar additives. These can be classified in a few clearly defined groups, and their main uses are recorded. The article states the effects and the resulting properties connected with each additive, both with respect to fresh and to set concrete. The importance of fluidification is emphasized, as well as the plastification and dispersion of the cement, leading to a notable improvement in the concrete quality. Finally a brief mention is made of the cost factor of these additives.
