The authors states the need to develop a method of designing flexible pavements which approach optimum functional and low cost solutions. This paper brings up to date the problem of calculating the various dimensions of a pavement, and it describes eight methods which are being currently used. Suitable charts and diagrams are also included. Professor Kucera concludes that these methods, of rational or empirical basis, in spite of their varying initial concepts and data, finally give comparable results regarding the calculation of the pavement thickness.
