In this paper explicit formulae are obtained for the calculation of the factor of safety in reinforced concrete structures. These formula are based on the principle of minimum generalised cost, in agreement with the method proposed in the «Instrucción H.A. 61 para el Cálculo de Estructuras de Hormigón Armado» (2nd and 3rd parts), published by the Institute Eduardo Torroja, Madrid, 1961. Consequently they provide results similar to those of this H.A.61 Instruction, avoiding the need to undertake trial and error methods. To obtain the formula, approximate analytical expressions of the cost of the structure, and of its probability of failure, are first worked out, as fimctions of the factor of safety. In the paper, numerical examples are also worked out. This paper is a revised summary of the article «The Factor of Safety in Reinforced Concrete Structures», by J. H. Hernández, «Revista de Ingeniería Civil», Havana, 1965.
