Abstract

This informative article mentions briefly the principles, history and development of the probability theories available to determine the factors of safety. It reminds the reader that first a design is conceived and then the calculations follow, and it also mentions the university known principles which are as simple as they are evident. A brief mention is made of some of the names who contributed to the theory. The author has worked in this field at the Instituto Eduardo Torroja on behalf of the CE.CM. (European Convention of Metallic Construction), under the direction of J. Batanero.
