Method for the design of contention walls

The authors describe a method for the design of contention walls, which avoids initial trial and error attempts to arrive at the approximate dimensions of the structure. The graphs given in the text make it possible, in terms of the fill and foundation soil, to calculate the various parameters of the contention wall. Apart from analysing the behaviour of the wall under normal conditions, a study is also made of the case when a thrust overload is assumed. The proposed method, for the case of normal contention walls, with horizontal ground, gives an adequate accuracy for practical purposes. Graphs are provided for the case in which it is assumed that there is a linear variation in soil pressure on the foundation, and also for the case when this pressure is constant.
