The Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) firm had need to increase its iron ore exports within a brief period of time, and to enlarge its harbour facilities for this purpose. The main difficulties, to which this article refers especially, involved the modernisation of the old harbour. The other factors, higher output of the mines and greater railway transport capacity, could be adapted to the new requirements fairly easily. A special effort was therefore made to rationalize the transport arrangements, especially the harbour-ship transfer operation, to eliminate delays, and reduce costs.
