Drilling of tunnels with the use of explosives

The drilling of underground tunnels involves a number of problems, depending on the type of rock and the location of the work. The impossibility of utilising frequent vertical shafts under urban zones requires an ever more widespread use of so called continuous excavators, which have already been extensively used in mining projects. These types of machinery can be modified and improved in accord with the type of tunnelling to be performed. The author describes some of these specialised adaptations used in Europe and America, and collects information that is useful when selecting the best type of equipment for a particular project.
