The Building Research Establishment was set up in Britain in 1931. Its purpose is to apply to building those aspects of scientific knowledge that favour an evolution towards more rational shapes and procedures. Its activities are as wide as its field of interest equires. One of its main missions is to investigate how each type of material in a building behaves, so that the material can be used in the most economical manner. To integrate cheapness and saving in time, new prefabricating methods, both at the workshop and at the site, are studied. The activities of the Establishment also include themes that do not seem to have an immediate economic purpose, but which are not valueless, since they refer to an increase in the comfort of buildings. Finally, this Establishment helps underdeveloped countries in the choice of constructive forms that are best adapted to local economic and climate conditions. The Establishment has adequate means, both human and material, to fulfill its task efficiently.
