Abstract


The completion of the new Verrazano Narrows bridge, at the entrance to the New York harbour, signifies an outstanding triumph for civil engineering. Although the span of the Golden Gate bridge is very similar to this span the constructive methods, and many details, differ in essential aspects. Firstly, the very short time taken in the construction is notable and also the great accuracy of calculation of many of its features. For instance, the sphericity of the earth has been taken into account, in determining the span between the axes of the towers, at the top and bottom parts of these. A multicellular box, used for the foundation of the towers is of great interest. This has made it possible to reach the solid ground, starting from an artificial island, with full stability and safety. This structure means an increase in existing bridge spans, and new possibilities arise. On the other hand, the problem of the total life of such a structure remains, especially in this case, since the cables and anchorage are situated in a highly corrosive environment, such as the air over the sea. One of the main artificers of this great work is the venerable Aurmann, from whom such rich experience and knowledge has been passed on to us.
