Abstract


An agreement was signed on August 11, 1927, between Spain and Portugal, on the development of the river Duero along the section which is common to both countries. The Spanish government gave the firm Iberduero, S. A., the right to exploit the river between the rivers Tormes and Huebra. It would seem that the hydroelectric exploitation of a river with a slope of 0.372% should best be accomplished by means of pressure conduits. But the volume of water involved the urgent demand for electric power and the geological and topographical conditions of the valley counselled the adoption of systems of dams and power stations at each dam. The Aldeadávila dam is a thick vaulted dam. Its height is 140 ms, with a surface spillway. It has 8 circular sluice gates, 14 x 8.30 m each, and a reserve height of 5 m. The capacity of the dam is 115 x 106 m3 of water. The power station is below the ground, and has 6 generators, each of 142.500 KVA. This article describes in detail the construction and characteristics of this very important project.
