La Academia de Bellas Artes de Berlín, fundada en 1696, ha ejercido en el transcurso de los siglos una gran influencia sobre la vida artística de la antigua capital alemana. Disuelta en el año 1933, fue creada de nuevo después de la guerra —hacia 1950— en la zona oriental, no pudiendo igualmente renacer en Berlín Oeste hasta 1954. Recientemente se ha construido el nuevo edificio, sede actual de la Academia. Su realización se ha llevado a cabo gracias a la gran ayuda prestada por Henry H. Reichhold, de Nueva York, un alemán nacionalizado norteamericano, que ha contribuido en gran parte al desarrollo cultural de su ciudad natal, Berlín.
