Abstract

Spatially speaking, Carlos Mijares’ oeuvre is based on the simple construction of, semi-circular concentric archivolts, each cantilevering one half foot beyond the one below, generating huge corbels that rest on the two intersecting sides of squares. In his architecture, the author skilfully combines ceramic materials and reinforced concrete.
This type of construction requires no centring, since each successive archivolt rests on the one below; their different radii in space might be described by an imaginary cord attached to the base.
The overall effect is enhanced by a play on the geometry of cube-shaped bodies whose square plan view becomes octagonal via a 45º turn on their axes.
