Abstract

This paper comments the method of determining stresses in rectangular beams under bending loads, when the beams are fitted with simple, supercritical reinforcement, and when the calculation method is in accordance with Reinforced Concrete Specification h. a. 61, based on ultimate loads. In this case the compression zone, assuming a uniformly distributed compression stress, is more than hall of the effective depth of the section. Hence the failing stress of the concrete, and the depth of the compression zone, are not known a priori. The study of this case involves two stages: 1) exact theoretical calculation, 2) practical simplification of the resulting formulae.
