Indoor Swimming Pool at the Sabadell Club

Abstract

Initially the Sabadell Swimming Club included the following facilities: an open air pool, 14 by 15 ms in size; a building containing the men's dressing rooms and the attendant's quarters (two levels); a woman's dressing room; sport's equipment stores; a small secretary's office; a basketball court; pelota court; children's swimming pool; sports ground and gardens. The total ground area is 6,382 ms². The Club decided to improve the installations and build an indoor pool, which could be used throughout the year. The new indoor sporting installations cover an area of 43 by 34 ms, and serve a number of functions, including both the practice of sports by the club members and the organisation of public events, at which up to one thousand spectators can be accommodated. This new building has several sections, which are separated by dilation joints. These sections are: Section A: contains the pool and lateral stands for spectators. Section B: this is rectangular and houses the mens' dressing rooms. Section C: houses the secretary's office, public hall and ancillaries. Section D: includes the kitchen, bar, restaurant, and is circular in planform. The structure is radial, in reinforced concrete, and is completed with a rectangular block for the staircase and a lookout balcony. A solarium is situated on top of this block. The whole project is designed in accordance with the Public Spectacles Regulations. The relative positioning of these sections is evident from the exterior design, which reveals the internal functional uses. The overall project shows an interplay of masses and openings which is most pleasant.
