Abstract

In the field of construction confusions and misunderstandings sometimes arise owing to lack of precision in the language employed. The purpose of this article is to underline how important it is to follow, as far as possible, the meanings given in the Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Language Academy for the words which are currently used by architects and engineers. The first part of the article discusses the meanings of the word «¡tension» (stress) and its derived terms, with especial reference to prestressed concrete. In the second part other words, of doubtful clarity, are analysed.
