Abstract

The author presents a number of general facts on the subject. He gives the surface equation and that of the generator line. He offers simple and quick methods of establishing the forces and stresses in parabolic hyperbolic shells. The various types of roofs conforming to this mathematical shape are analysed. Attention is given to the wide field of application of this general kind of structure, both in urban architecture and in connection with large and industrial buildings. A simple way is offered to obtain good natural illumination with this type of roof structure. A number of illustrations are shown to facilitate the understanding of the text. The graphical information substitutes with advantage many otherwise lengthy descriptions. Finally the author offers advice on matters to be observed, and adds: «the design must be such that it can be built as cheaply as possible, provided it satisfies a high aesthetic standard and the technical requirements implied in this type of construction».
