Carreteras sobre dunas

Al oeste de Yuma, estado de Arizona (EE. UU.), se extiende una amplia zona desértica formada por dunas de arena cuyas partículas tienen un diámetro medio de décimas de milímetro. Esta zona tiene una longitud de unos 70 km, y anchura similar. En esta región de dunas, los vientos de velocidades de 80 a 90 km/h son casi constantes en los meses de marzo y abril de cada año. Tal velocidad es suficiente para mover las dunas, aun las de 10 m de altura, con velocidades suficientes para hacerse intransitable la superficie ondulada que van formando al desplazarse de una a otra parte.
