Los suelos, más o menos estabilizados, se emplean de muy antiguo para levantar edificaciones, constituyendo, con frecuencia, los muros de las mismas y, en ocasiones, también los pisos y cubiertas. En todas estas aplicaciones, el suelo, por razones de la función que cumple, se encuentra en condiciones un tanto distintas de las que se producen en las vías de comunicación.
