Father Vicente Tosca, architect, philosopher, mathematician and astronomer, began his Treatise on Architecture (included in his 9-volume Compendium on Mathematics, 1701-1715) by addressing the question of vault design.
Architecture's most subtle and exquisite achievement... is the construction of all manner of arches and vaults, cutting the stones and adapting them with such skill that the gravity and weight that should cause them to fall to the ground hold them in the air, one against the other, by virtue of the mutual complexity that links them, to firmly and securely close the structure across the top.
