Ibadan fue elegido como lugar adecuado para el emplazamiento de la Universidad por el Comité Elliott, y se dispuso de un solar ocupado por vegetación salvaje. El proyecto inicial no incluía la construcción de capillas, si bien más tarde se acordó la disposición de tres: una Capilla de la Universidad para uso de todas las religiones, a excepción de la católica y la musulmana, que disponen de la suya propia.
