La Isla de Mallorca tiene escasos recursos hidráulicos y térmicos. Carece de ríos de régimen permanente aptos para realizar aprovechamientos hidroeléctricos satisfactorios, y tampoco tiene en su subsuelo combustibles en cantidad suficiente para mantener centrales térmicas importantes. Solamente existen algunas manchas de lignito, cuyas capas de potencia pequeña y de características muy variables dan un porcentaje medio que se puede fijar en un 27% de cenizas y un poder calorífico de 3.600 calorías por kilogramo.
