Al no existir una dársena apropiada para el intenso tráfico a que iba a dar lugar el complejo industrial de la Empresa Nacional Siderúrgica, fue necesario dragar el terreno de la ría para permitir la entrada y maniobra de buques de hasta 7 m de calado en BMVE.
