El Instituto Nacional de Colonización, y después de detenido estudio de un anteproyecto de la Confederación Hidrográfica del Guadiana, decidió se construyese una presa que debía embalsar las aguas del río Ardila, con objeto de construir un embalse cuya utilización inmediata sería la transformación en regadío de unas 700 hectáreas, y, a su vez, dejar abiertas las posibilidades a una futura instalación para el aprovechamiento hidroeléctrico del salto hidrostátíco que crea el dique de cierre.
