La mayor parte de los norteamericanos viven en casas unifamiliares que rara vez construyen por su propia iniciativa, recurriendo a un arquitecto para que estudie su vivienda individualmente, sino que confían en el espíritu emprendedor, experiencia e imaginación de contratistas de casas en serie. Con este sistema, el peligro, reconocido por todas las instituciones conservadoras, radica en que se llegue más allá de lo que es capaz de aceptar la mayor parte del público.
