Abstract


Three authors dispute the invention of the ventilated facade, Johansson (1946), Birkeland (1962) and Garden (1963). The first two pointed and glimpsed it. However, the intellectual paternity is awarded to Garden (1963), who established the physical principles of the “rainscreen” or ventilated facade, as we know it today. To the background list of the ventilated façade are added two projects of 1954 and 1956 by the architect César Ortiz- Echagüe Rubio, for two groups of housing in Santiago de Compostela. These buildings, already built, present an original constructive solution, which clearly is a precursor of the ventilated façade and which could well compete with G.K. Garden the intellectual paternity of the ventilated facade.
