Abstract

Under the auspices of the Colonia Güell Consortium, the present owners of the church, restoration is being carried out by the Architectural Heritage Service of the Barcelona County Council which .following its usual "objective restoration " methodology based on a detailed analysis of all the procedures proposed, drew up the current critical restoration action plan. The article considers the different options for completing the building Gaudi abandoned in 1914, bearing in mind it is a masterpiece and its importance to both the local community and the world at large, as well as its present distressing state of disrepair. The basic objectives were considered to be the recovery the value of Gaudi s original work and consider it finished; in other words, it was decided not to complete the church imitating Gaudis style -a case of "no Gaudi without Gaudi". At the same lime, the building should be finished so that it could be used by the community, despite the fact it is a Gaudi masterpiece.
