Abstract

This paper researches on a group of houses designed by A. Lawrence Kocher and Albert Frey between 1930 and 1939. These houses are analyzed, considering them as “crossroads works” that are the point of confluence between the machine exaltation, the solidity and material stability of the European Modern Movement and the instability, lightness and temporality of residential constructions and the various forms adopted by the tradition of mobile domesticity in North America. The article studies the building technology of each house using original archive material. The paper describes the relevance of these dwellings as a point of confluence of various traditions of different disciplinary fields and also as a point of origin for a new type of American modernity based on its transience: the Ephemeral American Modernity.
