This article describes the works of slope stabilization in the ancient quarry of Punta Lucero, in the facilities of the Port Authority of Bilbao. This technical intervention was necessary to prevent rockfalls, threatening some strategic fuel storage facilities in the port platform. The works have been designed considering that the material 0btained from the works has to be employed as fill material for another contractual arrangement in the area, the construction of a Central Breakwater in the extension of the Port of Bilbao. Besides, the technique of descending benching has been employed, together with a double shaft-tunnel system. This method has many advantages, both from the perspective of safety and from an environmental point of view, as it reduces the emission of greenhouse gases. This system has no precedents in slope stabilization works.
