Study of different structural systems for the design of tall buildings: dimensioning criteria and application to two cases of study.

The choice of the most appropriate structural system for a tall building is usually based on charts introduced by Khan in the 60’. In these charts each structural typology is associated with its limit height. However, the progress of construction methods and materials may vary the heights for which the systems are effective, allowing the limit height to be considerably increased in some systems. This paper analyzes the application of different typologies (framed tube, shear wall, tube in tube, outriggers) to the design of tall buildings. Dimensioning criteria are established for each structural system. In addition, parametric models are used to compare the different systems by applying them to two case studies, a 240-meter and a 480-meter high buildings. The results show that some structural typologies may achieve ranges higher that those proposed by Khan.
